TEAM INFORMATION
In May 2009 a group of students from years 7 & 8 at the Grange School and Sports College in Warmley, Bristol, joined with parents to build two kit cars to take part in the GreenPower Kit car Challenge. The Challenge is a competition between schools across the country to see who can build the fastest kit car. They were given a kit from the local council and they had until July to build and perfect it.
The first race was at Goodwood Race Circuit in Sussex. The newly formed team “The Stags” were competing against teams that had several seasons’ experience. The Stags finished 17th out of 42 starters, a good first result. The team had until September to fix any problems with the car before the second race, at Castle Combe.
The team suffered several breakdowns during the race but still managed to finish 21st out of 37 starters. This result put them through to the National final in October. The final was an excellent day for everyone on all teams. The Stags started 59th on the grid, and over the course of the race went up 16 places to finish 44th and of 82 starters, easily their best result that season.
The Stags 2009 Season
Update 17/3/10
The Stags have reformed into The Stiglets and are building a new car for the 2010 season. There have been a few changes with the team members. Two members have left and one has joined, leaving them with six members. The first race is in June and everyone is hoping for the best in the races to come. So far the basic frame has been assembled and the team has a few sponsors and they are trying to get all of the required parts as quickly as possible. Please go to Car Build to follow its progress.
Update 27/6/10
The Stiglets have entered two races so far this season, one at Goodwood Race Circuit and one at Castle Combe Race Circuit. The first of these was on 20/6/10 and was at Goodwood. It was the first appearance for the newly named Stiglets and there was high expectations. Those expectations were met when the car finshed 13th out of 37 cars, covering a distance of 93.6 miles. The second race was at Castle Combe and an excellent day saw the Stiglets finish 10th out of 35 cars, covering a distance of 88.8 miles. On Sunday 17th October the team were in the top 75 in the country and were in the National final for the second time. The day started quite cold but as the cars went onto the grid for the parade the sun started to warm everyone up.We had added a few basic modifications to the car we used last year as the Stags, so we were hopeful we would improve on last year’s ranking. With 73 cars at the start it was great sight. As the race went on through the afternoon we dropped a few places, but in the last hour we managed to make up several places to finish 33rd. This was a great improvement on last years ranking of 46th.
Update 19/01/11
Work is now continuing on a brand new car for the 2011 season. It has been made from scratch with all of the parts being made during the meetings. We are hoping to prepare the car for the start of the season, but we have kept our car from the 2009 and 2010 season as a backup. We also have new team members aswell, as Garion and Shelly left during the 2010 season. Luke and Matt joined the team and are looking forward to the start of the season. This means that the team still has 12 members, 6 students and six parents. Everyone is working hard to get the car ready and we are all hoping for another improvement in the new season.
Update 1/8/11
The frame for the new car has recently been built to take the new batteries. It has several key parts attached already; these include the steering, seat, floor, rear axle, brakes and wheels. Because of the new specifications for the 2011 season, we took the decision to lighten the car by shortening it. It also has a removable roll bar, this enables us to transport the car in the back of an estate car and therefore save the extra cost of hiring a van.
We would also like to welcome our newest member, Tom Little, into the team. Tom replaces Matt who left earlier this year.
